Hack Green Bunker (Cheshire)

Down a quiet country road in Cheshire, a grey building suddenly looms. A solid grey and concrete structure, it certainly looks like it has SOME purpose…but that purpose was never clear to the average passer-by for many years.

Now open to the public, though, its reason for existence is now much clearer: it was intended as a centre of regional government if the Cold War became hot.

The building itself looks somewhat small – from the outside. However, step inside and it is seemingly packed with equipment sufficient to run a small town.

In the early years of the Cold War, it was what was known as a ROTOR site – part of an air defence early warning radar network constantly on the lookout for possible Soviet attacks.

In the mid-1970s it was converted into one of the country’s decentralised HQs for government should the worst come to worst and Britain came under nuclear attack. And that’s how we see it today.

If the worst did happen, members of the UK government and the Civil Service would disperse across the country with the aim of at least some of them surviving to pick up the pieces afterwards. Realistic? Who knows…

The bunker was turned into a large underground complex with, theoretically, everything its inhabitants might need to survive for a period of time – including air conditioning, communications and its own protected water and electricity supplies.
