This Royal Observer Corps (ROC) bunker is very much a case of “blink-and-you’ll miss it” – consisting as it does of just a few unassuming structures beside a road and with nothing but a few sheep for company.

Perched on the top of a hill outside the village of Castleton in North Yorkshire, in the beautiful North York Moors, it may seem an unusual place to watch the apocalypse, but that’s pretty much what it was…

ROC officers would be sent underground in tiny bunkers such as this one during a period of international tension and, if the worst came to the worst, they would then be expected, with the help of some basic instruments, to record and transmit the location/direction and strength of any nearby nuclear explosions – and the subsequent radioactive fallout – so a better picture could be gained of the extent of the carnage caused. That was the idea, anyway…

The bunker at Castleton is now open to the public on very limited occasions – and presumably only a few people can fit down there at any one time! Sadly, I’ve not had the chance to go down there myself yet – but I’m sure it’s a fascinating experience.
